Once again, you amaze me =) This will be the BEST 100% ORGANIC, non-gmo, truly freshest of the fresh veggie garden in the country....of course, showered with love and kindness!! You are teaching Sam the MOST important, awesome lesson ever and I wish I could get some greens growing, but I have to wait until the official "last freeze date" of May 15th! ENJOY every teachable moment with your lovely Sam!!!

    Lovin' Farmer Sam, I Am.

Green smoothie compost. Brilliant idea (I will steal)!

I'm still dreaming of my square foot garden. We can't safely plant until Memorial Day around here (for fear of FROST). But in a couple of weeks, I should be able to put in some of the leafy greens like spinach, kale and chard that don't mind the chilly temps. Oh, and peas are hardy little guys too.
  • debbiedoesraw · 8 months ago
We will be doing some edamame, sugar snap peas and beans too!
I have a lettuce mix.. says cool weather.. I have give it a go and pick them as babies!
    crop rotation is the rule!

Ooohhh! Fabulous! Never thought of a smoothie compost for gardening. I was just sitting here googling ideas for starting my garden without tilling and here you are :-)
  • debbiedoesraw · 8 months ago
    thanks Terry!
Until I get a 'real" compost system going this works for me.. not for a weak blender of course!

Yay for urban gardening! I need to plan what I want to grow...definitely tomatoes and basil, but the rest is up in the air! Snap peas would be awesome. Can't wait to see how your babies grow. Sam is adorable! ;)
  • debbiedoesraw · 8 months ago
    thanks Wendi Lou!
Sam is something else, a budding gardener too!
I have sugar snap peas, watermelon, cantaloupe, corn.. many more. Should be a good summer of eating!

    Farmer Sam is absolutely adorable!!

Alas, I have no place to start my own garden. Which sucks!

I really want to though. Someday - somewhere!!

    ILU!!!

There is a wonderful idea called hydroponics. Went to a class and found you can do it big or small. Whatever you want. Can make a lot of things from used items. Don't need to buy the expensive store items. Can do this all year long.
  • debbiedoesraw · 8 months ago
I am not sure if hydroponics is the way to go for me.. I like the idea of the soil and all the nutrients in it going into my food!
but some folks would do best with it!
    thanks Cindy

It can be super efficient, but its alot of working parts too. Things can and will go wrong (clogs, pumps burning out, etc).

The automation is great though. But a sq foot method (either 1'x4' or 4'x4' or anything in between will be much easier to maintain if the water always has lots of goodies in it. I would add in molasses powder to feel all the soil microorganisms.

Mulching is obviously key as well, keeping things much more drought proof.

And organics can be difficult with hydro because of clogged sprayers. But a bubbling bucket (google it) is an easy experiment that costs very little to get started. Plus with ocean minerals, some amazing results could be had.

Don Jansen's work can be learned about from oneradionetwork.com and he does hydro with just diluted sea water. AMAZING results. So if one has the patience of dealing with some minor mechanical problems once in a while, it can be very doable. Nothing ever bothered his plants, they were so mineralized that they became impervious. Think about it.

    RAMBLING!!!

I never thought of adding a green smoothie to the soil. I'll have to try that. I did add a green smoothie to my compost pile that I've started.

I have started planting and am enjoying it. You guys look like you are having so much fun.

Your post is very good and has inspired me even more.

Best wishes on your garden and I look forward to seeing your updates. :)

NIIIIICE!!!! I love the garden smoothie idea!

Those seedlings are going to take a while!! You might want to throw in some seedlings from the farmer's market, and then rotate later. Seedlings can take FOREVER!! (Im looking at a bell pepper seedling, about two weeks old, that is about 1'' high...)

OMG DEB! The miracle fruit! You WOULD NOT BELIEVE IT!!!!!!

We were drinking pure lemon juice and it tasted like sweet candy! IM NOT KIDDING!!!!!

    LOVE YOU GUYS!
  • debbiedoesraw · 8 months ago
    A!
I need to find me some of that Miracle Fruit! ever since I read Fruit Hunters I have wanted some!
love you too, yes, we may buy some tiny organic plants to start our garden groovin now.. also got lots of straight into the soil types too!

My garden plans for this year involve mailing a bunch of seeds to my dad in hopes he will plant them so i can eat some when I visit. how sad is that? I love gardening but gardening + back pain do not work. i do like the sprout and go to the farmer's market!
  • debbiedoesraw · 8 months ago

Love you too Debs! It's not space that's the issue [my mother has over a half acrea of land to work with], it's our crazy schedules that is the culprit. But I really like your tip and think I'll go for it. Can't have too much lettuce in the house.

    Yeap, and sprouts....

Yesterday Peter, my mom, and I hung out at my father house all day and night with him and my sister. My dad has a fig tree in his backyard. Peter removed a couple branches and guess what, some sort of gardening is taking place now. Peter will plant the two branches in my mom's backyard. I hope they grow up to be strong fig trees. :-)
  • debbiedoesraw · 8 months ago
figs rock! and birds like them.. and bees too I think!
you will be farmers in no time.. I am thinking of starting a very small bee hive too.. maybe get some pollinating going!

I am also starting my first square foot garden this year. It's about 4 ft by 25 ft and will have irrigation running through the soil.....thanks to our wonderful irrigation/landscaper guy who attached it to our exhisting irrigation system. I heard that we reap about $250.00 worth of produce for every $60.00 we invest in plants. Nice.
Can't wait to see how our gardens grow!
    Much Love to you.

Well! Japanese tomatoes. I live in Japan but I've never heard of them. Perhaps because everything is written in Japanese and in Japan they maybe just call them tomatoes...please...post a picture up when they grow!

Sam is such a cutie! First time I see a video of her. What an articulate little girl. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree they say!
  • debbiedoesraw · 8 months ago
thanks Gab! We found the tomato at the Japanese market, we will see what comes of it!
My girl is quite the diva, loves the camera , can you tell!
